Interesting Facts: Space Rovers

Due to our first post on space facts (https://curiositykilledthecat.co.za/2020/07/31/space-facts/ ) doing well and how you all seemed to enjoy it as much as we did making it, we bring you more space facts but focused on space rovers. We hope you enjoy!

• The curiosity rover is 2.1 metres or 7 feet high.
• The average length of a rover’s arm is 7 feet or 2.1 meters long.
• A rover weighs about 2,260 pounds or 1,025 kilograms.
• The average lifespan of a rover is 5 and a half years.
• The first space rover was launched on the 4th July 1997 on Mars. (Sojourner)
• There were 4 rovers sent in total all being on Mars: Sojourner, Opportunity, Spirit and Curiosity.
• Curiosity is the only active rover as of the moment.
• Rovers send messages to Earth via a high-gain antenna (HGA).
• Curiosity has been on Mars since 6th August 2012.
• Curiosity, found a mineral named hematite which typically is formed in water.
• A rover on a flat surface has a speed of 152 metres per hour.
• Curiosity cost 1.5 billion dollars to make, reminder this was in 2012.
• The power source of a rover is called a Multi-Mission Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (MMRTG)
• It can take up to 8 years maybe even more to build a rover.
• Its travel to Mars can take around 7 months.
