The “self-love” lifestyle

If you have spent anytime on social media or reading self-help books, you have probably come across some form of “self-love” lifestyle. You may of envied it or even try apply to your own. Personally I have tried and it got be asking the question, is this beneficial?

What is a self-love lifestyle?

Self- love is the appreciation for oneself through spiritual, physical and psychological growth. A self-love lifestyle is the steps you take to reach that growth, via exercising regularly, eating healthy, meditating, reduction in screen time, learning etc. The self-love lifestyle gets most of its exposure through celebrities’ and influencers (social media stars), which causes their followers to try obtain a similar lifestyle.

The benefits of the self-love lifestyle:

  • The lifestyle is good for your health, it helps control your weight and boosts your immunity.
  • It can help you with your emotional control, meditation for example relieves stress.
  • Can give you life satisfaction.
  • Improved mental health and self esteem.
  • Greater happiness

Ultimately this lifestyle is very beneficial for your phycological, physical and spiritual wellbeing. It can be very rewarding and genuinely give you a new zest for life. However, there is another side of it, obtaining this lifestyle takes a lot of energy. Work or school takes a lot of time for most of us, the little free time we have is precious and used for rest. This is where the self-love lifestyle lost me. Life got too busy and demanding to workout daily and when I pushed myself to continue living this lifestyle with the pressures of school, I burnt out.

Burn out is emotional, physical and mental exhaustion caused by excessive stress. This exhaustion leads to a lack of motivation, which coincides with the self-love lifestyle. Burn out makes it hard to obtain any lifestyle. Another aspect of of the self-love lifestyle is the inaccurate perspectives we get on it.

I previously said that the self-love lifestyle is obtained mostly by celebrities and influencers. We get glimpses of their lives through interviews and videos that show a selective view which is most often inaccurate. What they leave out is the off days and the downfalls of living this lifestyle. Its understandable that they leave the information out, they dont have to disclose it. However, they create an unattainable image that can be harmful because those who fall victim to it tend to be their younger and vulnerable viewers.

What is a self-love lifestyle?

Self-love is how you define it. Following a stranger’s lifestyle to have self-love is just silly, you should make a routine that supports your values and goals. You may use others as inspiration but never copy it exactly. Something to keep in mind is not to make big changes so quickly. Going to the extreme suddenly will lead to burn out, so make small changes overtime.
