Get to Work- was it worth it?

Getting into Sims 4 is quite a large investment, there are so many packs to consider. Hopefully I am able to make your choice easier by giving my reviews on each pack. Note your liking of a pack will depend on your game style, personally I prefer family gameplay. With all that in mind lets get into the review of Sims 4’s first expansion pack, “Get to Work”.

The item and pack overview: https://www.ea.com/games/the-sims/the-sims-4/pc/store/mac-pc-download-addon-the-sims-4-get-to-work

The key features of this pack is playable careers (doctor, police officer and scientist), the ability to open/run a retail store and play as an alien. These are fun features to play specially if you want to spice up your game play but unfortunately this initial fun fizzles away after playing with it for a while. I will be exploring these key features giving my opinions on each.

The Playable Careers:

Playable careers are fun if you play with smaller Sim families, which isn’t my game style. When I play with large families I often dont have the time or interest to go to work with them. Playable careers further deter me as they can be glitchy at times and its unproductive, for an example trying to take one sims temperature can take my sim like 3 hours (sims time).

In saying all that the Sims team did a good job developing the 3 careers. The tasks are logical for the career and can be very fun, personally my favourite playable career is the doctor.

The Retail Stores:

Fun in theory, a nightmare to own. I do enjoy having the retail stores as an option to visit but I don’t. I forget this feature is an option, and I personally dont like it from a visitor or owner perspective. As someone who loves custom content the clothing retail stores are useless to me, because if I dont own the store all the clothes are Maxis Match (this is obviously a personal preference) .

I tried owning a retail store specifically a clothing boutique, and my distasting for it retail stores only grew. It takes so long to get a sim to purchase anything, and because of that reason you never make a profit. It gets more buggy if you have “Get Famous”, because if any of your customers are real celebrities you cannot talk to them about buying an item.

The Aliens:

I don’t mind the aliens at all, I think they are well done for being a side feature in the pack. The special effect makeup is really cool and so is the world. However I dont use aliens a lot because its just not my style, if you love supernatural gameplay this will be far more useable to you.

The clothing, skills and build objects:

Sometimes we dont buy a pack for the gameplay but rather the items, skills or clothing. If that’s your view, the objects and clothing aren’t worth purchasing the pack. The objects are very specific for the careers and in the world of custom content the clothing is not anything to write home about. Now in this pack you do get the photography and baking skill which is very usable, dont know if that should be the sole motivation to purchase the pack though.

Final thoughts:

The pack is average, it was the first expansion pack so it’s understandably not the best. Personally, I would only purchase the pack if you have the extra money to spend or if its on sale.

Despite a rather negative review, I still love the Sims 4. Thank you for reading, I hope this was informative. Please share your thoughts on the pack in the comments below.
