Boredom Busters: Book Edition

Back in the beginning of quarantine we made a series of posts called Boredom Busters to give some ideas on how to stay entertained during this time. We bring you more because the pandemic is still not over and because boredom doesn’t just end.

  • The Divergent series by Veronica Roth – post-apocalyptic version of Chicago and follows Beatrice as she explores her identity within a society that defines its citizens by their social and personality-related affiliation with five factions. It has 6 books in the series and it keeps you on your feet, even when you finish the series it will still leave an impact on you.
  • Zak Darke, Agent 21 by Chris Ryan- When Zak Darke’s parents die in an unexplained mass murder he’s left alone in the world. That is until he’s sought out by a mysterious man. This series has 6 books in total, it has a good and smart story line that can get boring at times however overall really enjoyable.
  • Gone by Michael Grant- everyone over 15 vanishes, and kids are trapped under a dome called the FAYZ. It has the total of 9 book, it is great for teens but can still be enjoyed by anyone it is really a page turner.
  • Tale of Magic by Chris Colfer- girl pursues her destiny, defying the rigid gender roles and draconian laws of a kingdom that has outlawed magic and forbidden women from reading. The story line is interesting as well as compelling it is also really easy to understand because of how descriptive it is.
  • Boy in Stripped Pajamas by John Boyne- Bruno, the young son of a Nazi officer, who befriends a Jewish boy named Shmuel during World War II. It is truely heart breaking and really shows the inhuman treatments in concentration camps.
  • The Black Magician series by Trudi Canavan- The book tells the story of Sonea, a young girl from the slums, as she discovers her magical potential. The writers consistency and descriptiveness makes for a compelling reads and very enjoyable characters as well as excellent world building.
  • Dollanganger Children Series by V.C. Andrews- Dollanganger family lives an idyllic life in Gladstone, Pennsylvania until Mr. Dollanganger dies in a car accident, leaving his wife Corinne deep in debt with four children and no professional skills. The family is forced to move in with Corinne’s wealthy parents, from whom she is estranged. These books will pull at your heart s strings making you feel so many emotions as it is truly horrifying to read the story unravel.
  • Temperance Brennan series by Kathy Reichs- follows Temperance Brennan who is the leading forensic anthropologist in the world, the books follow her unraveling crimes. If you are an intellectual you will enjoy these books.
  • Dork Diaries by Rachel Renée Russell- Dork Diaries follows eighth grader Nikki Maxwell as she chronicles through text and sketches her move to a snooty new school. This is a great series for children I remember enjoying it when I was younger as the main character was relatable and the way of story telling was very enjoyable.

Authors to check out:

  • David Walliam has a boat load of books for kids and teens, his story telling is quite similar to Roald Dahl.
  • James Patterson has so many very enjoyable books that are hard to put down.
  • Trudi Canavan is a really good author specially if you enjoy fantasy.
  • Stephen King is a given but he is truly talented at what he does.
